Tracing the origin of photography, a group exhibition of seven winners of the Neaps Prize

On July 3, 2026, as an important photography project celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Sino French Cultural Spring, the "Camera Obscura - September laur é ats du Prix Ni é pce Gens d'images" exhibition was officially opened at the 1905 Art Space in Shenyang. This exhibition is jointly organized by the Consulate General of France in Shenyang, the French Cultural Center, the 1905 Art Space in Shenyang, and the Villa P é rochon Photography Art Center in France. It features 104 works by seven Prix Ni é pce award-winning photographers from 2014 to 2025. The exhibition will continue until September 13, 2026.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Sino French Cultural Spring. On April 24th, two months ago, the opening ceremony of the Sino French Cultural Spring in Northeast China was held at the 1905 Cultural and Creative Park. Florent Aydalot, the Minister Counsellor for Culture, Education, and Science at the French Embassy in China, attended and delivered a speech. The Baroque dance "Four Seasons" has completed its public premiere in China, and the dual exhibitions of French photographer Vincent Fournier's "Unknown Plants" and Julien Mignot's "Then, Now" have opened simultaneously, marking the beginning of the 20th Sino French Cultural Spring for audiences in Northeast China. After two months, 1905 Art Space once again welcomes another heavyweight photography project of the Sino French Cultural Spring.

Nieppes Prize: The Goncourt Prize for French Photography

The Nieppes Prize was founded in 1955 and is organized by the French Society of Photographic Sciences (Gens d'images). It is the first annual award in France aimed at professional photographers. The award is named after the inventor of photography, Nic é phore Ni é pce, and aims to recognize professional photographers under the age of 50 who are French nationals or have resided in France for at least three years, encouraging long-term and in-depth creative responses to contemporary issues.
 
The award is officially endorsed by the French Ministry of Culture (Minist è re de la Culture) and the National Library of France (BnF), and self recommendation is not accepted. Candidates must be nominated and recommended by professionals in the photography industry. The winner will receive a systematic collection of their works from the National Library of France, a prize of 10000 euros from the Picto Foundation, an artist's book published by The Eyes Publishing, and a solo exhibition opportunity at the Dityvon Gallery at the University of Angers. Due to its pioneering and enduring influence, the Nieper Prize is hailed as the "Goncourt Prize" of the French photography industry.

 

Curator Philippe Guionie: a curator deeply tied to the Nieper Prize

This exhibition is curated by Philippe Guionie, the President of the Peroxuan Photography Art Center in France.

Giovanni comes from a history major, and his photography practice revolves around memory and identity construction, with documentary photography as the main tone, and portraits as his main form of creation. His photography philosophy is to 'give faces to those collective memories that have not been preserved' - he often combines photography with sound recording, writing human stories through images and anchoring them in time. He has published multiple works, including 'African Veterans',' A Small Piece of Paradise ',' Africa America ', and so on. His personal creations have been exhibited at the Arles International Photography Festival, the Sete "Anomaly" Photography Festival, the Toulouse Water Tower Art Museum, and the Paris Polka Gallery. In the past decade, he has frequently traveled to West and Central Africa for reporting and resident creation. In 2008, he won the Prix Roger Pic for his series "African Soldiers and Three Rivers". Since 2009, he has been a member of Myop photo agency.

Gioni has a deep connection with the Nieper Prize: he personally recommended Gr é goire Eloy to participate in the 2021 Nieper Prize and ultimately won it. In his recommendation, he wrote, "Gr é goire Eloy provides us with a unique, strong, steadfast, and profound perspective... Each series has its own meaning, and connecting them together outlines the contours of a long constructed work

As the leader of La Villa P é rochon, Gioni has long been committed to promoting the international dissemination of French photography. Last year, he was an important promoter of the "La Grande Commande" China exhibition, bringing this national commissioned project initiated by the French Ministry of Culture and coordinated by the French National Library to Guihu Art Museum in Fuzhou, Yue Art Museum in Yantai, and 1905 Art Space in Shenyang. From the "Grand View of Photography" to the "Nieper Prize Group Exhibition", Gionee has presented the complete sequence of French national photography commissioned projects to top French photography awards to Chinese audiences in two years.

The Camera Obscura is the oldest imaging device before the birth of photography, and also the starting point for Nieppes' invention of photography. This exhibition is named "The Dark Box", which not only pays tribute to the 200th anniversary of the birth of photography, but also symbolizes the creative process of every photographer using themselves as a "dark box" to incorporate the external world into the interior, and then project it into images after time brewing.

The creative styles of the seven participating artists span a wide range - from Matthew Perno's 29 year long tracking record of the Roma family to Marina Gadone's philosophical gaze on 'emptiness'; From Gregor Eloy's documentary on disappearing glaciers and the intersection of science, to Julian Maguire's intimate gaze on the same family for 25 years; From Juliette Agniel's exploration of the connection between humans and the universe in caves and interstellar space, to Anna Lise Broyer's literary practice of "reading" images as pages, to Ed Alcock's response to the identity loss of the globalized era through family history. What brings them together is not a unified style, but the same way of looking at an object for ten years or even longer.

Curator Gioni said, "This exhibition is my personal tribute to the Neaps Prize. I chose these seven winners not because their styles are similar - on the contrary, their visual language is vastly different - but because they share the same thing: an almost stubborn way of gazing at an object with their lives

Mathieu Pernot won the award in 2014.

Matthew Perno was born in Freires in 1970 and graduated from the Arles National Higher School of Photography. His works continue the vein of documentary photography, but deconstruct its patterns and construct a multi voice narrative system. Since 1995, he has been tracking and filming the Gorgan family of Roma people he met in Arles for 29 years. Since 2019, he has traveled to the Middle East and Lesvos Island multiple times, incorporating issues of war, exile, and population migration into his creations. He won the Nadal Award in 2013 and the Henri Cartier Bresson Award in 2019.
The series of works exhibited this time are "Window Scenery" (2007), "A Better New World" (2006), and "Witness" (2006), which explore the illusions of viewing, memory, and utopia through the window scenery before the demolition of the apartment, enlarged copies of postcards from the French suburbs from the 1950s to the 1980s, and the characters' faces that appear in them.

Marina Gadonneix, awarded in 2020.

Marina Gadone was born in Paris in 1977 and graduated from the Arles National Higher School of Photography. Her creations are known for their "photographic puzzles," focusing on "temporarily uninhabited spaces" such as photography studios and scientific laboratories, exploring the boundaries between visible and invisible. She has won the HSBC Photography Award in 2006, the Lumi è re Foundation Photography Sample Book Award in 2019, and the Lewis Barthes Research Fund Award in 2023. Her works are collected by institutions such as the Pompidou Art Center and the National Library of France.

This exhibition showcases his series of works "The Daily Burning House" (2009-2012) and "Landscape" (2012). The former captures simulated combustion houses used for firefighter training, collecting artificial debris in the midst of intense flames; The latter presents the blue or green screen used in movie special effects, exploring the "image before the image is produced".

格雷瓜尔·埃洛伊（ Grégoire Eloy）awarded in 2021.

Gr é goire Eloy was born in 1971 and has been engaged in documentary photography since 2003. He is a member of the famous French photography group "Tendance Floue". For the past twenty years, he has traveled to Eastern Europe and Central Asia, creating long-term works around Soviet heritage and the South Caucasus War; Since 2010, we have collaborated with the scientific community to create a trilogy on material science; In recent years, we have focused on the relationship between humans and nature through immersive stays in forests, mountainous areas, and marine environments.
 
His nominee for the Nieper Award was none other than the curator of this exhibition, Philip Gionee.

This exhibition showcases a total of 15 works from six series, including "Vizova" (2003-2005) in Eastern Europe and the post Soviet space, "Retreating Waves" (2008-2013) on the dry coast of the Aral Sea, "Lednikuazo" (2016-2018) on the coast of Guernsey, "Dawn" (2020) created during the pandemic, "Osu Glacier" on the Pyrenees Glacier (2021-2024), and "Intertidal Zone" (2020-2024) in the intertidal zone of Brittany, fully presenting his creative shift from geopolitics to natural ecology.

Julian Maguire was born in Boulogne Billancourt in 1973 and currently lives and works in Paris. His creations are rooted in his personal life journey, capturing the traces of time left on loved ones through his lens. He compared his over 20 years of family filming to a 'long shot' - filmmaking is the core element of his creativity.
 
The 15 works exhibited this time are selected from his 50 piece series "En Vie" submitted for the 2022 Nieper Prize selection. They were shot between 1999 and 2020 and depict the life scenes of his wife Caroline and their three children. The fragments of daily life form a hymn dedicated to light, love, and life. In July 2025, the series was exhibited at the Peroxuan Photography Art Center led by Giovanni.

朱丽叶·阿涅尔（ Juliette Agnel） ，2023年获奖。

Juliette Agniel was born in 1973 and studied plastic arts and anthropological aesthetics at the University of Paris I, as well as at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. She blends painting and photography, exploring the connection between photographic media and the vastness of nature. In 2017, her works were exhibited at the Arles Photography Festival and the Paris Contemporary Art Exhibition (FIAC); In 2023, its prehistoric cave series will be exhibited at the Arles Photography Festival; The recent work 'The Spirit of Dahomey' was exhibited in the Carrousel Hall of the Louvre Museum.
 
The 17 works exhibited this time include "Children's Hands" (2023) and "Taharqa and the Night" (2019). The former focuses on prehistoric caves along the banks of the Alsy River, capturing the emergence of invisible objects; The latter captured pyramids and ancient sites in the darkness of Sudan, turning archaeological sites into a dreamland and of mysticism.

安娜-丽丝·布罗耶（Anne-Lise Broyer） ，2024年获奖。

Anna Lise Broglie was born in 1975 and currently lives and works in Paris, while also teaching at the Lorient Academy of Fine Arts. She takes "experiencing literature with eyes" as her creative philosophy, closely interweaving reading with the emergence of images. Her image is printed on matte paper (like a book page), pointing to a distant and revered reality. In 2023, she won the first residency project at the Military Museum of the É cole des Invalides in Paris and was selected for the large-scale commissioned creative project "Reconstructing Photography" initiated by the French Ministry of Culture to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of photography.
 
This exhibition showcases a series of 17 works titled "Color Comes Next" (2015-2021), depicting images wandering between empty rooms, beaches, and streets, weaving a dialogue between visual and literary elements at the edge of words and the world.
 
Ed Alcock, awarded in 2025.
 
Ed Alcock was born in Norwich, UK in 1974 and holds dual French and British citizenship. In 1999, he won the Young Photographer of the Year award jointly selected by The Guardian and The Independent. After moving to Paris in 2000, he became a photography correspondent for The New York Times. Since 2011, he has been a member of Myop Photos. His works focus on family, inheritance, and identity, and have been twice selected for the Taylor Weising Portrait Photography Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

This exhibition showcases 15 of his works, including "The Buried Treasure" (2025) - responding to the loss of identity under the wave of globalization by excavating the history of family miners; Waiting "(2015) - Exploring Private Memories and Sense of Belonging; Sweet Home "(2020) - chronicles the four years of turbulence surrounding Brexit in the UK; Infertility "(2020) - Paris Life Journal during the Pandemic; Between Dogs and Wolves (2017) - Portrait of Brittany Region; And "Youth" (2013) - Watching the Growth of a Son from a Father's Perspective.

The fate between 1905 Art Space and French photography has a long history. In March 2024, 1905 Art Space held the "Prix Picto - Exhibition of French Fashion Photography Award Winning Photographers" during French Language Month, showcasing the works of five fashion photography award winners: Adeline Care, Isabelle Chapuis, Gabriel Dia, Lucie Khahoutian, and Sean McGirr, marking the beginning of 1905's exploration of the French photography award system.

From July to September 2025, the "La Grande Commande" exhibition curated by Philippe Gioni will be held at the 1905 Art Space. This project, initiated by the French Ministry of Culture and coordinated by the French National Library (BnF), invites 200 photographers to create a comprehensive photographic record of France in the 2020s. It is the largest public photography commission project in Europe. The exhibition presents four themes of "freedom, equality, universal love, and potential" and has previously toured at the Guihu Art Museum in Fuzhou and the Yue Art Museum in Yantai. Curator Gioni is an important promoter of the Chinese exhibition of this project.

From "Prix Picto" exploring the commercial and aesthetic dimensions of French fashion photography, to "La Grande Commande" presenting the grand narrative of France's national level image literature project, and then to this "Prix Ni é pce" group exhibition focusing on the creative depth of the highest award in French photography -1905 Art Space. In three years, it has completed a complete display of the French photography ecology from commercial awards to national commissions and top art awards. This is not only a microcosm of the deepening of photography art exchange under the background of the 20th anniversary of the Sino French Cultural Spring, but also the continuous cultivation of 1905 Art Space as an important platform for Sino French cultural exchange in Northeast China.
