The Journey of the Body Home

Beijing, as a city, carries the history of the Tao Body Theater. In 2008, Tao Body Theater was established in Beijing. Tao Ye, Duan Ni, and Wang Hao's almost stubborn perseverance has contributed to the success of Tao Body Theater today - in the public eye, they are a professional full-time modern dance troupe that demands perfection and always stays at the forefront of the international arena. However, behind the halo, artists are also constantly thinking about how to bridge the gap between independent art and public perception.

In 2024, the Tao Body 2 Troupe was established in Beijing with the aim of "dancing for you, dancing for yourself". In September of that year, the first work of the Tao Body 2 Troupe, "Action World," landed for the first time at the Tianmuli Art Museum in Hangzhou. Afterwards, it successively passed by Shanghai Pudong Art Museum and Anaya International Dance Festival. Compared to other cities, the landing of "Action World" in Beijing is more like a return, a retrospective of a life journey. From professional to popular, from stage to daily life, this creative energy that originates from continuous exploration of physical movement has gone through spring planting and summer plowing, and finally re injected into this home that has nourished the dance troupe for 17 years in this deep autumn.

Connecting with more people

The most unique feature of 'Action World' is that it eliminates the distance between art and daily life. When you walk into the 1000 square meter exhibition venue, the first thing that catches your eye is a pure white space paved with professional adhesive. Sofas, tables, chairs, and beds from Zhiyin Furniture, as well as green plants from FLORAL ESSAY, are scattered among them, together forming the temperature of this space. Under the guidance of the guide, the audience can freely choose to sit down, lie down, relax, or engage in spontaneous physical interactions under the guidance. Every audience member is not simply 'watching', but 'present'. The boundary between the guide and the audience is quietly broken through each interaction. As a warm medium, the guide, together with soft lighting, bright colors, and imaginative music, creates a "relaxing space" that invites the audience to open themselves up and re perceive the echoes of their bodies, just like when you were a child at home, you could lie on the sofa freely, relaxed and at ease.

The core of the exhibition lies in returning to the body as the most essential artistic medium. The unique on-site nature of this exhibition also makes the live performance of "Action World" a "flowing feast". It is not a completed work, but an open framework, and its content is co created and written by the continuous influx of the public. This trait of 'always in progress' not only attracts many media, art practitioners, and friends who have been paying attention to and supporting the Tao body to the scene, but also attracts more audiences who are eager to explore the body and love life. The six hour uninterrupted dynamic, with bustling crowds coming and going, naturally transforms the art space into a vibrant "city living room", constantly stimulating emotional connections between people.

Action World in Beijing 798

On the art map of Beijing, 798 is the most prominent coordinate. It not only welcomes audiences from all over the world, but also continues to nourish the local art ecosystem. The choice of 'Action World' to take place here is like a journey back to the body itself, as well as a dialogue between art and daily life.

The art factory where this exhibition is located still retains its unique Bauhaus style industrial structure. The sky shines from the dusty glass dome, witnessing countless historical moments in a calm and constant manner. It is at this ongoing scene that the Tao Body 2 Troupe, based on the triple dialogue of body, space, and memory, combined with the resonance of body, image, installation, and sound, creates an enclave of art integrated into life, full of temperature and imagination for the audience.

Entering the exhibition hall, the first impression is "emptiness", a space full of possibilities. Daily homes are scattered among them, and guides are either still or moving, shuttling through the crowd. Looking around the exhibition hall, not only are there images of the two groups of pottery bodies displayed on the walls, but there are also photography and image series works by the visual director of pottery bodies and independent artist Fan Xi. This time, she chose Paper Cuttings, a traditional Chinese art form, but did not stop at the representation of symbols. Instead, she took it as a methodology to carry out a continuous exploration of "memory and reconstruction", integrating the creative inspiration of urban culture and contemporary lifestyle into this space.

Exhibition site of "Action World - Body Language on Site"

Action World has strong local characteristics, and its creation and expression are more closely related to daily life, emitting a unique temperament belonging to the local cultural context in every place. Every time it lands in a new city, it attracts new local guides to participate. The 20 guides recruited this time are all from Beijing, where they study, work, and live. The city marks carried in their bodies and the body stories they share with the audience have truly rooted the work here. When they create in space, they present not only artistic concepts, but also emotional slices of the city. In this space full of possibilities, people of different ages, professions, and backgrounds connect and listen to each other through the most authentic language of their bodies, stirring up infinite possibilities that belong to every 'presence'.

The exhibition of "Action World - Body Language on Site" in Beijing 798 will last until December 7th. We sincerely invite you to personally step into the world of action during this flowing time, and to participate in writing this unfinished "body letter" together in the most intuitive way. Through interaction and co creation, you can feel the temperature of art connecting life and preserve a shared body memory that belongs to us.

With the opening of the Tao Body "Action World" exhibition, the first Beijing Art and Technology Week will be held from November 28 to December 7, 2025 in the 798 Art District. The event is themed "Livelihood" and presents a future intelligent living public space for the public through more than 50 diverse content forms that deeply integrate technology and art, including summit forums, music scenes, AI drama and dance, theme exhibitions, etc. The aim is to create the most vibrant urban cultural landmark in Beijing this winter.
